There was some skipping and breaking up when Wi-Fi was initially disconnected and the handoff to VoIP occurred, but the connection was maintained. On the plus side, when I wandered away from Wi-Fi, the phone didn't drop calls as it switched to Sprint. If you're a TextNow user in a place with wobbly Sprint data connectivity, then this is going to be a hassle for you. Even when Wi-Fi connectivity was poor (cellular handoff also works for Wi-Fi), the service never chose to use cellular instead. I had to manually force it by turning data off. TextNow never chose to use the cellular network on its own. In one egregious case, it mistook, "New Brunswick, New Jersey," for "Baltimore, Maryland." This wasn't the fault of the phone, since our reviews of the Galaxy S5 on all of the major carriers noted excellent voice quality, with good noise cancellation. There were repeated skips that broke up my words, making it difficult to understand on the receiving end. Outgoing calls went through without issue, but Amtrak's automated voice recognition system struggled to understand what I was asking it. In general, VoIP call quality over Sprint's network was poor. The carrier says it will fall back to traditional cellular calling if quality isn't good enough, but that wasn't what I found. When there's no Wi-Fi, TextNow defaults to making voice-over-IP (VoIP) calls using Sprint's data network. Moving outside the range of a Wi-Fi network, however, puts you in trouble. They were largely stable and of good sound quality, although there were some noticeable pops on the receiving end. I was able to make outgoing Wi-Fi calls without any issue.

The second one is the texting and calling app, which is available for free on a wide range of devices.
